Chi Phat is a remote riverside village in the heart of the Cardamom Mountains, Southeast Asia’s largest tract of contiguous rainforest. It was once a hotspot for poaching and logging, threatening the rich biodiversity of the region, which is home to over 100 mammal species, including elephants, gibbons, bears and leopards, as well as hundreds of bird, reptile and plant species.
In 2007, Wildlife Alliance started a programme to help 630 families at Chi Phat village make their living from tourism instead of hunting and trafficking. Since then, Chi Phat has become a model for community-based ecotourism, empowering the villagers to protect their natural heritage and share it with visitors from all over the world.
