Mutanda Eco Community Centre is a community-owned ecolodge on the shores of Lake Mutanda, a stunning crater lake surrounded by lush green hills and towering volcanoes. The lodge was established by Mgahinga Community Development Organization (MCDO), a local NGO that works to improve the livelihoods of the communities living around Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. By staying at the lodge, you are contributing to their projects in education, health, agriculture, and ecotourism. Mutanda Eco Community Centre offers a unique opportunity to explore Lake Mutanda, one of the most beautiful and biodiverse lakes in Uganda. The lake is home to over 200 bird species, including the rare grey crowned crane, as well as otters, snakes, frogs, and fish. You can take a boat ride, canoe, or swim in the clear water, or hike along the shore and enjoy the scenery. You can also visit the Skeleton Island, a sacred site where the locals bury their dead.

Mutanda Eco Community Lodge is committed to sustainability and community impact. The lodge uses solar power for lighting and water heating, and rainwater harvesting for irrigation. It also practices organic farming and composting for its gardens. The lodge supports several community projects through MCDO, such as providing funds for roofing the main building of Chihe Primary School, sensitizing the locals about nature conservation, creating employment opportunities for the staff, and creating a market for the local produce. The lodge also empowers the local women by providing them with training and income-generating activities, such as making crafts, weaving baskets, and offering massages.

Getting There

The easiest way to get to Mutanda Eco Community Lodge is by flying to Kigali International Airport in Rwanda, and then taking a taxi or a bus to Kisoro town in Uganda. The journey takes about 4 hours and costs around $50 USD per person. You can also fly to Entebbe International Airport in Uganda, and then take a domestic flight to Kisoro Airport, which is about 15 minutes away from the lodge. The flight takes about 1 hour and costs around $250 USD per person.

Alternatively, you can take a bus from Kampala, the capital of Uganda, to Kisoro town. The journey takes about 10 hours and costs around $15 USD per person. From Kisoro town, you can take a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) or a taxi to the lodge. The journey takes about 20 minutes and costs around $5 USD per person.
