If you’re looking for a unique and eco-friendly way to explore Byron Bay, hop on board the world’s first solar-powered train. This vintage not for profit two-carriage train runs on a restored 3km coastal track that links the town centre with the North Beach precinct and the Arts Estate. Along the way, you’ll enjoy scenic views of the ocean, the rainforest, and the wetlands, as well as glimpses of local wildlife.
The train is powered by a 4.6 billion year old energy source – the sun – and has a battery bank that can store excess power for cloudy days or night trips. The train also has a diesel engine as a backup, but it’s rarely used. The train has 92 seats, some of which are vintage lounge seats in the first-class carriage, and can also accommodate bikes, prams, and surfboards for free.
