Sustainability
Sustainability at Chumbe Island Coral Park is a core value and a guiding principle for all its activities and operations. The park aims to create a model of financially and ecologically sustainable park management, where ecotourism supports conservation, research and education for the benefit of local people and the environment. The park has implemented various eco-technologies and practices to minimize its impact on the environment and to conserve the natural resources of the island. Some of these include: Using rainwater catchment, photovoltaic energy and solar water heating systems to provide water and electricity for the eco-bungalows and other facilities. Using composting toilets, vegetative greywater filtration and organic waste composting to reduce waste and pollution. Using locally sourced materials, such as coconut palm thatch, coral rag stone and mangrove poles, to construct the eco-bungalows and other buildings in harmony with the landscape. Using organic farming methods, such as mulching, composting and crop rotation, to grow fruits and vegetables for the restaurant. Using local produce, such as fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables, to prepare Zanzibari cuisine for the guests, while avoiding imported or processed foods that generate waste and emissions. Using traditional dhow boats for transfers and excursions, while avoiding motorized boats that cause noise and water pollution. Using biodegradable cleaning products, such as coconut soap and vinegar, to clean the eco-bungalows and other facilities. Using reusable or recyclable materials, such as glass bottles, cloth bags and bamboo straws, to avoid single-use plastics that harm marine life. The park also strives to promote sustainability among its staff, guests, partners and local communities. Some of the ways it does this include: Providing training and employment opportunities for local people, especially women and youth, who make up most of the park’s staff. Offering free environmental education programs for local schools and communities, such as school visits, summer camps, environmental clubs and scholarships. Supporting local conservation initiatives, such as turtle monitoring, coral reef restoration and mangrove planting. Raising awareness and advocacy on sustainability issues, such as climate change, marine pollution and biodiversity loss. Participating in global networks and certifications that recognize sustainability excellence, such as the Global Ecosphere Retreats (GER), the Long Run Initiative (LRI) and the Green Destinations Standard (GDS).
