Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge is committed to preserving the environment and supporting the local community. The lodge uses solar power for lighting and heating water, dry composting toilets that produce organic fertilizer for the gardens, lake water for showering and washing dishes, biodegradable products for cleaning and toiletries, gas stoves for cooking and rocket stoves for heating. All waste is separated and taken back to the mainland for recycling or disposal. The lodge also employs local staff and supports local businesses and projects. The lodge is part of Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, which has a long history of conservation and community involvement. Sabi Sabi works closely with the Sabi Sand Wildtuin Association to ensure that their operations are in line with the reserve’s management plan and objectives. The lodge is also a proud member of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, a collection of boutique hotels in extraordinary places around the world with a demonstrated commitment to sustainability, authenticity and excellence. The lodge has been recognized by National Geographic for its innovative design, its low environmental impact, its contribution to wildlife protection and its engagement with local culture. The lodge also participates in various initiatives and programs that are supported by National Geographic, such as guest education, conservation research, community development and cultural preservation. Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge is part of Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, which has a strong focus on community impact and empowerment. Sabi Sabi supports various community projects in the nearby villages of Lillydale, Huntington and Justicia, such as education, health care, water supply, agriculture, sports, arts and culture. Some of their initiatives include: Building and equipping schools, libraries, computer labs and science labs for over 10 000 learners. Sponsoring bursaries, scholarships and internships for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Supporting clinics, hospitals and mobile health units that provide free medical care for over 25 000 people. Supporting boreholes, water tanks and irrigation systems that provide clean water for over 15 000 people. Supporting vegetable gardens, fruit orchards and poultry farms that provide food security and income generation
