Serere Eco Lodge is a hidden gem in the Bolivian Amazon, a place where you can immerse yourself in nature and culture while enjoying comfort and tranquility. Serere means “preserving life” in the local Tacana language, and that’s exactly what this eco-reserve does: it protects 40,000 hectares of pristine rainforest and its rich biodiversity, as well as the indigenous communities that live there.
Serere Eco Lodge consists of six rustic cabins and four spacious houses, all built with local materials and designed to blend in with the surroundings. Each cabin has a private bathroom, a balcony with hammocks and a view of the forest or the lagoon. The houses have two or three bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen and a dining area. The décor is simple but cozy, with wooden furniture, colorful textiles and handicrafts made by the locals.
Serere Eco Lodge does not have a pool, a gym or a spa, but it does have plenty of natural attractions to keep you entertained and relaxed. You can swim or kayak in the clear waters of the lagoon, where you might spot caimans, turtles or pink dolphins. You can hike or bike through the trails that crisscross the reserve, where you can see monkeys, sloths, toucans, macaws and many other birds and animals. You can fish for piranhas or catfish in the river, or enjoy a picnic on a sandy beach. You can also join night walks or boat rides to discover the nocturnal wildlife.
Serere Eco Lodge also offers cultural and educational activities that will enrich your understanding of the Amazon and its people. You can visit a nearby village and learn about their traditions, crafts and cuisine. You can plant trees or help with other conservation projects. You can listen to stories and legends from the elders or watch traditional dances and music. You can also visit the library, the museum or the art gallery, where you can find books, photos and paintings related to the history and culture of the region.
Serere Eco Lodge is committed to sustainability and social responsibility in everything it does. It uses solar power, rainwater harvesting, composting toilets and organic waste management to minimize its environmental impact. It employs local staff and guides who receive fair wages and training. It supports various initiatives to improve the health, education and livelihoods of the communities. It also hosts artists-in-residence programs and cultural events to promote creativity and diversity.
The wider region of Rurrenabaque is one of the most diverse and beautiful areas of Bolivia, where you can explore different ecosystems such as the Andean mountains, the cloud forest, the pampas and the jungle. It is home to many indigenous groups such as the Tacana, the Moseten, the Tsimane and the Uchupiamonas, who have preserved their languages, customs and beliefs. It is also a hotspot for wildlife observation, with more than 1,000 species of birds and 300 species of mammals.
Getting to Serere Eco Lodge is an adventure in itself. You can fly from La Paz to Rurrenabaque in about 45 minutes on a small plane that offers stunning views of the landscape. Alternatively, you can take a bus from La Paz to Rurrenabaque in about 18 hours on a bumpy road that crosses mountains, valleys and rivers. From Rurrenabaque, you can take a boat ride on the Beni River for about three hours until you reach Serere Eco Lodge.
The room rate at Serere Eco Lodge starts from $150 per person per night (all-inclusive), based on double occupancy. The room capacity ranges from two to six people depending on the cabin or house. Serere Eco Lodge welcomes children of all ages but does not have any accessible facilities for guests with disabilities.
